Description
(2013) United States Mint 1922 "Silver Proof Peace Dollar" Illustration No.80 Hand Drawn in Graphite on 96lb. Bristol Thick Board Sheet Stock - Pencils Used: 4h, h, b, 5b, 8b - Most of this drawing was done using an h pencil - Drawing Time: 40 hours to complete.
The Peace dollar is a United States dollar coin minted from 1921 to 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the coin was the result of a competition to find designs emblematic of peace. Its reverse depicts a Bald Eagle at rest clutching an olive branch, with the legend "Peace". It was the last United States dollar coin to be struck for circulation in silver.
The public believed the announced design, which included a broken sword, was illustrative of defeat, and the Mint hastily acted to remove the sword. The Peace dollar was first struck on December 28, 1921; just over a million were coined bearing a 1921 date. None of the Peace Dollars are considered "Rare" other than the 1934-S. In case anyone was wondering, All US Silver Dollars minted between 1921 and 1935 have a stylized u. At that time all silver dollar coins were made with a U that looks like a V. This was thought to be a modern or stylistic way of making Us and was actually done on purpose.
Drawing Note: There were 4 segments in creating this Coin - 1). The overall size and Diameter including the Coins lip 2). The Lettering and Date 3). Background and 4). The Buss Portrait. The entire Background was drawn first and stumped using a No.4h pencil and this took 6 hours to complete - 6 Stumps were used to even out and Blend the overall Background which was tricky because the lead needed to be distributed evenly so that the surface stayed constant - First Thing Drawn was the Diameter and Lip of the coin, then The Portrait Buss, lettering was last as the background need to be blended and stumped first without causing the lead to bleed into them, then finally the Liberty, In God We Trust and the date which included additional shading and detail.
