The front of the pendant shows the profile of a Gallic warrior, with the words "Gallia" ("Gallia" was the goddess of Gaul). During the Roman era, Gaul was a part of Western Europe comprising present day Northern Italy, France, Belgium, Western Switzerland and parts of the Netherlands and Germany. The bottom left hand corner of the pendant reads, Vernon (Not shown), short for Frederic de Vernon born in 1858, the pendant's designer. Vernon was a famous Victorian French sculptor and engraver of medals. The back of the pendant shows a monument and a waving cloth or flag against the background of a nature scene with water, leaf and rising sun. The back also reads "EXIIT AD. COELVM AMIS. FELICIBVS ARBOS". This is a section of a larger text from Dante's "Divine Comedy" which reads:
. . .and in a little while, lo! a mighty tree shoots up
sky-ward with joyous boughs and marvels at its strange leafage and fruits not its own.
